Unlock Precision: Custom Cannula Solutions Tailored to Your Needs

2025-04-30

In medical device development, precision and customization are decisive. Shanghai Mekon Medical Devices Co., Ltd. specializes in engineering custom cannula solutions that meet exact dimensional, mechanical, and clinical requirements — whether that means a specialty needle for a novel application or a specific cannula geometry for a new device. Mekon partners with customers from initial design through to the final, finished product.

As a complete-solution provider for special medical needles, cannulas, precision medical metal products, and essential medical consumables, Mekon manages every step in-house — from raw steel to the meticulously packaged and sterilized cannula. This single-source model shortens development cycles, protects intellectual property, and maintains consistent quality across production scales. Bring us your blueprints or samples, and our experienced team will develop and mass-produce customized needles or similar steel components engineered to the exact performance demands of your device.

In-House Manufacturing Capabilities

A vertically integrated process gives Mekon direct control over tolerance, surface quality, and traceability at every step:

  • Tube welding
  • Tube drawing
  • Precision machining
  • Thorough cleaning
  • Secure packaging
  • Validated sterilization

To ensure unparalleled quality and stability, Mekon uses advanced equipment imported from Japan and the United States, and develops specialized processing equipment for unique product requirements.

Industry context: Stainless-steel needle tubing is governed internationally by ISO 9626, which defines dimensional and mechanical requirements (including wall categories such as regular, thin, and extra-thin wall). Validated sterilization typically follows ethylene oxide (ISO 11135) or gamma irradiation (ISO 11137), with process validation confirming a defined sterility assurance level.

Customization Parameters
Materials

Mekon works with a range of high-quality, biocompatible materials:

  • Stainless steel: 304, 304L, 316, 316L, and more
  • Nitinol (nickel-titanium alloy)
  • Other alloys on request

Material selection guide: 316 and 316L add molybdenum for superior corrosion resistance over 304/304L, making them well suited to demanding or implantable-adjacent applications; the “L” (low-carbon) grades improve weldability and reduce sensitization at welds. Nitinol contributes superelasticity and shape memory, allowing a cannula to deform substantially without kinking and then recover its form — valuable for navigating tortuous anatomy.

Tube Dimensions
Parameter Specification
Gauge range 7G – 35G
Wall thickness Regular Wall (RW), Thin Wall (TW), Extra Thin Wall (ETW), Ultra Thin Wall (UTW)
Maximum length Up to 2,250 mm
Overall length (OAL) tolerance Standard ±0.020″ (±0.5 mm); tighter tolerances available on request

Why wall thickness matters: for a given outer diameter, thinner walls (TW → ETW → UTW) enlarge the inner diameter, which can raise flow and aspiration rates or allow a finer gauge to be used at the same lumen — a key consideration for high-viscosity injectables and patient comfort.

Tube Surface Finish
  • Smooth internal and external surfaces
  • Custom surface treatments tailored to the specific application
Tube Hardness

Specify the exact hardness required for your application. Request a Vickers hardness range; if no range is specified, standard tubing with ¾ to full hardness will be provided.

Tube Surface Roughness

Surface roughness is measured as Roughness Average (Ra) in micro-inches or microns, using industry-standard methods — a controlled Ra supports cleanability, lubricity, and consistent tissue interaction.

Bevel Length

Reference the overall bevel length as needed. Bevel geometry directly influences penetration force and tissue coring, so it is specified to match the intended clinical use.

Notches or Holes
  • Specify notch length, depth, and hole width
  • Indicate any required radii
  • Reference the precise position of holes or notches from the butt end
Butt-End Treatments

The proximal (butt) end can be customized for assembly, identification, and handling:

  • Micro-blasted ends, Flared ends, Reduced ends
  • Marking for identification, Precision-machined bores
  • Lateral drilled bores, Knurled surfaces for better grip

Mekon custom cannulas are used across a wide array of critical medical applications, including:

  • Endoscopic biopsy needles, Fine-needle biopsy
  • Structural heart / transseptal needles, Electrophysiology procedures
  • Soft-tissue biopsy needles, Pulmonary disease interventions, Specialist trocars

Needle Varieties
Parameter Capability
Gauge range 35G to 7G (0.0162″ / 0.413 mm to 0.180″ / 4.572 mm)
Lengths Up to 70″ (1,800 mm)
Wall thickness Regular, thin, and ultra-thin options
Materials Stainless steel, Nitinol, and other alloys
Comprehensive Complementary Capabilities

Beyond core cannula manufacturing, Mekon provides a complete suite of complementary processes:

  • Shaft marking, Echogenic enhancement (ultrasound visualization)
  • Rigorous leak testing, Tensile testing, Puncture-force testing
  • Precision EDM, Laser cutting, Electropolishing
  • PTFE coatings, Centerless grinding, Swaging, Heat treatments

Process insight: echogenic enhancement creates a micro-textured surface that scatters and reflects ultrasound; electropolishing reduces surface roughness (Ra) and removes micro-burrs; and PTFE coating lowers the friction coefficient to reduce insertion force and tissue drag.
